Matcha Is More Than a Drink
Most people have tasted matcha. Very few have truly experienced it.
Matcha Culture was born from a simple but radical belief: that matcha deserves the same reverence we give to fine wine, aged whiskey, or single-origin coffee. That within every bowl lies a world of terroir, craft, and philosophy — if only you know how to look.
We started Matcha Culture because we looked, and we couldn't unsee it.
Who We Are
Michelle and Fred are the founders of Matcha Culture — meditators, meditation instructors, and devoted students of the tea world. Our journey into matcha wasn't just about flavour. It was about what the practice of tea reveals: presence, patience, and the quiet intelligence of slowing down.
We are advised by national award-winning Japanese tea masters whose knowledge spans generations. Their guidance shapes everything we do — from how we source and blend our matcha, to how we teach others to taste it.
The Matcha Culture Framework
One of the things we noticed early on was that there was no shared language for matcha appreciation — especially for lattes, which have become the most popular way people enjoy matcha today.
So we built one.
The Matcha Culture latte tasting framework is the world's first proprietary framework for evaluating, ranking, and grading matcha lattes — with specific attention to how it dairy transforms the profiles of matcha. It draws on the principles of fine beverage tasting and adapts them for the unique character of Japanese green tea.
It's how we design our blends. It's what we teach in our workshops. And it's what we believe the world of matcha has been missing.
The Philosophy Behind the Bowl
Tea ceremony in Japan was never just about tea. It was a practice of dharma — of presence, of impermanence, of finding the extraordinary in the ordinary moment.
At Matcha Culture, we carry that spirit forward. Not as a museum piece, but as a living practice. Our workshops, our blends, our bowls, and our writing are all expressions of the same intention: to help people slow down, pay attention, and find something beautiful in a bowl of green.
